Chapter 33 Summary of Path of Lucas
Richard spends the week at the Ottawa Civic Hospital undergoing tests for severe breathing and swallowing issues. On December 31, the devastating results arrive. Richard has a cancerous tumour on his thyroid. An emergency surgery is scheduled for 6:00 a.m. the following morning. Dr. Reid breaks the grim news to Lucas, and the family spends a tearful New Year’s Eve supporting one another. Early on New Year’s Day 1980, Lucas, Isabelle, and Chelsea visit Richard before he is wheeled into the operating room. After an agonising wait, Dr. Reid emerges with incredible news: he successfully removed the entire tumour, and Richard is declared cancer-free.
Just days after Richard’s surgery, John suffers a severe attack where his lung collapses, which puts a fatal strain on his heart. The doctors inform Elizabeth and James that John is dying. On January 8, a newly discharged Richard visits his grandfather in the hospital to share the news that he is cancer-free, a revelation that brings a final smile to the dying patriarch’s face. The next morning, John passes away with Elizabeth by his side. As Lucas absorbs the news of his father’s death, he reflects on his life and feels a profound sense of peace, knowing that his immense personal sacrifices to save the family farm were entirely worth it. At John’s snowy funeral, per his long-standing request, six of his grandsons—including a still-recovering Richard—act as pallbearers.

Analysis of Chapter 33
Chapter 33 of Path of Lucas is defined by extreme emotional whiplash, heavily emphasising the intertwined nature of life and death within the Clarkson family. The narrative oscillates violently between tragedy and joy: Richard’s cancer diagnosis is followed by his miraculous recovery; John’s death is quickly followed by the birth of baby Daniel; and Richard’s terminal diagnosis coincides with Lucy’s beautiful wedding. This clustering of births, weddings, and funerals reinforces the novel’s overarching theme that the family’s life is an inescapable, rolling cycle of profound grief and beautiful new beginnings.

As the pain subsides, he hears Lucy’s children arriving in the hallway and miraculously feels Lucy squeeze his hand. Thrilled that she is communicating, Lucas asks her to squeeze again if she can hear him, which she does. He bargains with her. He promises to finish the story of his life if she will open her eyes.
The narrative flashes back to the aftermath of Richard’s death. Lucas and Isabelle find solace in caring for their granddaughter, Paige. However, this peace is shattered when Chelsea starts dating an unemployed man who repeatedly drives recklessly up the driveway, endangering the toddlers. When Lucas gently but firmly confronts the man about his driving, the boyfriend lies to Chelsea. He claims Lucas kicked him off the property. In response, Chelsea sells the mobile home and leaves with Paige. Devastated by the sudden loss of her granddaughter, Isabelle falls into another severe depression. She regains a massive amount of weight and develops health issues.
Over the next few years, the family continues to grow as Lucy, Johnny, and Steve have children of their own. Meanwhile, Elizabeth develops severe Alzheimer’s disease and is moved to a nursing home, where she eventually passes away on August 17, 1990. Lucas is absolutely crushed by his mother’s death. He weeps uncontrollably. He feels he lost her twice: first to the disease, and then to death. Witnessing Lucas break down serves as a profound wake-up call for Isabelle; she realises the immense burden of pain and suffering her husband has carried his entire adult life without complaint. Determined to give him the gift of a healthy wife, Isabelle takes strict control of her diet and mental health. As a result, she successfully loses the weight once more.
To celebrate Isabelle’s newly reclaimed health and her fiftieth birthday, Lucas and the children plan a massive surprise backyard party at Steve’s house. Isabelle is deeply moved by the celebration and thanks Lucas for his unwavering support. Over the next few years, the couple enters a golden era of their marriage; they purchase a Winnebago and travel joyfully across Canada and to Florida, cherishing their life together.
In 1993, Isabelle begins experiencing chest pains while gardening but dismisses them. After cooking Lucas his favourite steak dinner, she wakes up in the middle of the night with severe chest pain and gasps for air. Lucas rushes her to the hospital, where Dr. Lynch informs him she had a mild heart attack but is stable. Lucas goes home to sleep, only to be awakened an hour later by a frantic call from the nurse telling him to return immediately. He rushes back to the hospital, where he is met with devastating news: Isabelle suffered a massive cardiac arrest and died at the age of fifty-three. Shattered, Lucas weeps by her side. He asks how he will live without her. As he waits for his children to arrive on that day, June 10, 1993, he looks out the window and sees a monarch butterfly and a rose-breasted grosbeak fly away together into the dark-blue sky.
Analysis of Chapter 34
Throughout the novel, Lucas has acted as the unbreakable foundation for his family. He has absorbed the trauma of his father’s bankruptcy, Steve’s death, Darcy’s accident, Isabelle’s psychotic depression, and Richard’s cancer. His mother’s death marks the rare moment his emotional dam finally breaks. This breakdown is a crucial narrative turning point: it forces Isabelle to recognise the silent, lifelong toll of his sacrifices. Her realisation leads to a beautiful role reversal where she steps up to be the strong one. She actively heals herself to relieve his burden.
Again, the narrative underscores the tragic reality that the Clarksons’ moments of pure happiness are always fleeting. The recurring motif of the monarch butterfly appears during Lucas’s darkest moments. Following Richard’s funeral in the previous chapter, the butterfly symbolised Richard’s soul. Here, the butterfly is joined by a rose-breasted grosbeak, and they fly away together. Chapter 35 Summary of Path of Lucas
The final chapter of Path of Lucas opens in the present-day hospital room. As Lucas continues his vigil, he feels Lucy squeeze his hand and sees her eyes begin to twitch. At that exact moment, he hears voices in the hallway; Lucy’s sons (Danny, Ryan, Dwayne, and Johnny), their wives, and Lucy’s husband, Mark, enter the room. After they all greet Lucas, Mark sits beside Lucy and holds her hand. To everyone’s joy, Lucy squeezes Mark’s hand, and her sons take turns feeling her respond to them as well.
While the family celebrates these signs of life, Lucas begins to experience severe tension and pain in his chest, which he tries to hide by leaning against the footboard of the bed. Lucy moans and slowly opens her eyes to recognition of Mark and her children. In a weak voice, she asks for her father. Lucas steps forward, and Lucy tells him she had a vivid dream where he was recounting the story of his life. Lucas is overjoyed and praises his daughter’s strength, but as he smiles, he feels another sharp jolt of pain spreading through his arm. He excuses himself and tells Lucy he is going to the hallway to call her brothers to share the miraculous news of her recovery.
While the doctor marvels at Lucy’s recovery and lack of paralysis, Lucas walks to the phones and successfully calls his sons. As he hangs up, a catastrophic jolt hits his chest, folding him in two. He tries to catch his breath and head back to Lucy’s room, but another massive heart attack brings him to his knees, and he falls flat on the floor, unable to move.
As he hits the ground, Lucas hears beautiful music, sees bright lights, and feels himself leaving his physical body. Looking up, he sees his beloved Isabelle—young, beautiful, and wearing an angelic smile—reaching her hand out to him. They clasp hands, and Isabelle tells him to follow her. Lucas agrees. He looks back one last time to see a nurse discovering his lifeless body. The medical team frantically attempts to revive him with CPR and a defibrillator, but they are unsuccessful, and Lucas is pronounced dead.
Back in Lucy’s room, the family is celebrating her return when the doctor enters to deliver the devastating news: Lucas has died of a massive heart attack in the hallway. Lucy is crushed, crying that her father had just left the room to call her brothers. However, as she looks out the hospital window, she witnesses a magical sight: two rose-breasted grosbeaks singing on the ledge, with a gorgeous monarch butterfly flapping its wings above them. Recognising the spiritual symbolism her father taught her, Lucy smiles through her tears because she knows in her heart that her parents and her brother Richard have finally been reunited in the afterlife.
The novel concludes a week later at Lucas’s funeral. Lucy, having made a remarkable physical recovery, finds the miraculous strength to stand up and read the eulogy she wrote for her father. She honours his immense strength, his big heart, his legendary smile, and his profound wisdom. She declares that he was once her father but is now her angel. She ends her speech with profound gratitude for the guidance and inspiration both of her parents provided her.
Analysis of Chapter 35
Lucas’s death immediately following Lucy’s awakening is the culmination of his character arc. Throughout the novel, Lucas’s entire existence has been defined by sacrificing his own needs (his dream career, his savings, his physical health) to save and protect the people he loves. In the framing narrative, he ignores his escalating heart attacks through sheer willpower because he is determined to anchor Lucy back to the living world. Once he successfully witnesses her wake up and notifies his sons, his protective mission is complete. Having secured his family’s safety one last time, his exhausted body finally surrenders.
The author employs one final, devastating use of juxtaposition. The climax features the family experiencing the absolute pinnacle of relief and joy (Lucy miraculously waking from her coma without paralysis) occurring at the exact same moment as their most profound tragedy (Lucas dying alone in the hallway). This, again, proves that the Clarkson family’s life is a relentless, intertwined cycle of profound grief and beautiful miracles.
The motif of the birds and the butterfly provides the emotional closure of the novel.
