Cemetery Road is influenced by a number of historical, political, and socio-economic realities. The most profound historical trauma in the play is the anti-Christian/anti-Igbo pogrom in Kano City on June 6, 1966. Mazeli’s father, a Baptist minister, was dragged to the altar of his burning church and brutally slaughtered by horsemen. This ethno-religious violence scars Mazeli for much of his adult life. It fuels his revolutionary defiance on the one hand and on the other, it leaves his mother terrified that her son is destined to meet the same violent end.
